As early as 1986, Xicheng District and Nakano District became the sister cities, which is the earliest one establishing a friendly relationship with our district.


Nakano District lies in western part in 23 districts of Tokyo. It covers an area of 15.73 square kilometers, accounting for 0.73% of Tokyo and 2.63% of the urban area, which ranges 14 among the 23 districts. It has a population of 325,578, and 152,968 domiciles in all, a medium-size district in 23 districts. Density of population reaches 21,313 per square kilometers. Land of Nakano District is basically used for house now, only 3.2% for agriculture and other uses. Over half of the land was for housing in 1932, new land developed for such use every year afterwards. With the quickening of dwelling construction since 1955, and people reduced constantly since 1965, the insufficiency of housing got settled. But many problems still existed such as narrow and shabby living space. Only a few of houses in Nakano District are for private, and others generally adopt forms of folk managing and leasing. There are few enterprises in Nakano District. The tertiary industry of commerce and service amount is 85.7%. The secondary industry of construction and manufacture accounts for 14.1%. The primary industry of agriculture only accounts for 0.2%. The tertiary industry of commerce and service, which is in close relations with daily life, remains dominant in the district. There are 1,064 factories in the district, 83.7% among them are small factories with staff no more than 9 each. These factories are mainly for publishing, food, costuming, etc. There are many living condition problems in Nakano District, such as old, narrow and small rooms, with dark light and bad airiness. Houses separating from each other within 4 meters account for 55%, those fewer than 2 meters accounting for 11%.
