Shibuya is one of the districts where there are many Sino-Japan friendly exchange activities. After 1990, Shibuya began to have a contact with Xicheng District and became our sister city in 1996. Its government sent middle school students to Xicheng District to carry out friendly exchange the next year, and then participate in the Sino-Japan friendship youth summer camp many times with middle school students of Xicheng District. Shibuya District Japan-China Friendship Association sends folk delegations every year to visit China and carry out various forms of exchange activities with residents in our district.
Shibuya is one of the main downtowns in Tokyo, covering an area of 15.11 square kilometers. It has a population of 194,212, the density of which reaches 12,853 per square kilometers. Before the World War II, Shibuya was a railway terminal for southwestern Tokyo and eventually a major commercial and entertainment center. With rapid development in the mid 1960s, Shibuya became a quiet residential area with pines around, and took business and service industry as its main industry. Now, due to two large-scale developments of the surrounding areas of the Shibuya Station, Shibuya is also known as the center of the IT industry. Moreover, it is where the famous NHK of Japan is located, and also the athletes village of 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games and the famous Yoyogi stadium. In addition, this area is known as one of the fashion centers of Japan, particularly for young people, and as a major nightlife area.
